Why Travel Should Be the New Birthday Party

Throwing a birthday party can be stressful and expensive. A party for 10 kids can easily run you a couple hundred dollars just for the venue rental, plus cost of a cake, balloons, party supplies, goodie bags for the guests and presents for your child.  When all said and done, one sits back and thinks “That’s a lot of money for 90 minutes of blurry Kodak moments”. There are a lot of other things you can do to celebrate this special day that will create a lifetime of memories for your family. Not Convinced? Here’s a quick test:

  1. Do you remember your 10th birthday?
  2. What was the theme?
  3. What did you get?

(I don’t know about you, but I failed miserably)

Give your child a few options for their birthday adventure that fit in your budget and time frame. The funny thing about birthday’s is that they are always on the same day every year, so you can plan a head and budget accordingly. There are so many discount websites out there that can help you save money on your birthday excursion. Groupon is my go to; not only can you get great deals on vacation packages but also dinning and entertainment. (Disclaimer this is not an Ad for Groupon…unless Groupon is reading this and wants to donate a family vacation for 5, then yes, it is totally an Ad )

Staycation – Keep it close to home.

  • Camping – hiking, canoeing, swimming, fishing, s’mores and scary camp fire stories.
  • Local amusement park – rides, games, waterslides, a show
  • Hotel – In case you didn’t know or can’t remember what it’s like, one night in a fancy hotel is kind of a big deal when you are a kid. Having a pool in the hotel is a bonus!

Mini-Vacation –  keep it within a 3-8-hour drive, far enough away but not too far that you must take a weeks’ worth of work off.

  • Indoor Water Park Resort – This adventure can take place anytime of the year with the waterpark inside, game room, activities through the resort and for mom & dad the spa!
  • A Major City- Like New York City, how cool is it for kids to see major landmarks from movies in real life.
  • Beach- RELAX at the beach for a long weekend, collect sand and sea shells to remember this birthday adventure.

Long-Vacation – Go on a destination vacation that requires a week or more and a plane.

  • Disney World/Land or go on Cruise
  • Beach Resort on an Island (all-inclusive is the way to go)
  • Another country – Canada, Europe, Australia (wherever your piggy bank can get you)

A birthday adventure (vacation) for your child gives you a chance to reconnect with your family by disconnecting from life’s repetitive schedule of pickups, drop-offs, homework, housework, work-work and most importantly to turn OFF all electronic devices. Life lesson (kind of like a Snapple Fact) that the best gifts are not in the material objects we can buy at the store but in the memories, we make with the people we love.
